Gerard Majella was born in Muro, Lucania, Italy, in 1726. In his eagerness to serve God without reserve, he entered the Redemptorists as a brother. His five short years in the Congregation were marked by zeal for souls, patience in illness, and a great love for the most abandoned poor. His obedience, mortification, and spirit of prayer were matched by the humility he showed when his reputation was impugned and he was punished for actions he did not commit.
His gifts of healing, prophecy, and understanding of mysteries were outward signs of God’s favor. He died at Materdomini, Caposele, Italy, on October 16, 1755. He is frequently invoked as a patron for expectant mothers and those struggling to conceive.
